Little Giants Can't Hold On, Lose Two To Bradford

The Wabash baseball team saw two games slip from its grasp on Friday as the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford swept a doubleheader from the Little Giants. Bradford came from behind in both games to take a 7-6 victory in the first and a 6-5 win in the second. The losses ended the spring break trip for Wabash as the Little Giants return to Crawfordsville with a 3-6 mark for the season.

Game one saw Wabash jump out to a 2-0 lead on a Matt Carlson double and a Josh Stanton home run to leftcenter field. The homerun was the second of the trip for the Little Giant thirdbaseman and gave him 11 RBIs for the year. The Little Giants tacked on another run in the fourth inning before Bradford answered with two runs of its own.

The Little Giants came right back with a two-run fifth inning when Josh Bronaugh doubled, follwed by an RBI double by Carlson. Two batters later Brandon Candiano singled home Carlson, and Wabash was back in front.5-2.

Bradford answered with two in its half of the fifth to cut the Wabash lead to one. Then in the sixth inning the bottom fell out for the Little Giants.

Bradford scored three runs in the inning on three hits, an error, and a sacrifice bunt to take its first lead of the game at 7-5. Wabash answered with a run in the top of the seventh, but ended the game with the tying run at first base.

Game two was nearly a repeat of the late innings of game one. This time Bradford jumped out to the 3-2 lead after three innings before Wabash scored a run in the fourth to tie the game. The Little Giants took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Candiano took a bases-loaded walk to score Bronaugh and put Wabash in front 5-4. The Little Giants once again could not hold the lead as Bradford answered with three runs in the top of the seventh on two hits, a walk, and a hit batsmen. The second hit of the inning came with two outs and the score tied when the Bradford batter laced a shot into short right field to score the go-ahead runs.

Wabash picked up a run in the seventh and had runners at first and second with noone out, trailing by the one run. But the Little Giant hitters couldn’t pick up the one key hit to score the tying run, sending them to their sixth loss of the season.

Wabash will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as it faces DePauw University at 3 p.m.
