Smit Earns Trip To Nationals With Eighth-Place Finish

Junior cross country runner Jared Smit (Lafayette, IN/Central Catholic) earned a spot at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship Meet with an eighth-place finish at the Great Lakes Regional at Hanover College on Saturday. Smit toured the course in 26:07 to earn to opportunity to compete in the national championship meet that will take place Saturday, November 18, in Spokane, WA. "Jared worked very hard this season to rebound from last year's injury," said coach Rob Johnson. "I knew with a strong run that he could make the national meet. He really performed well today." Smit missed all but three meets as a sophomore with a knee injury. The Little Giant team finished 10th overall out of 30 teams in the Regional competition. Sophomore Mark Sherer (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso) took 38th with a time of 27:17. Dan Ruge (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton) finished 61st in 27:43 for Wabash.
