‘We are all brothers’: MXI, La Alianza Host Unity Walk

Hundreds of Wabash community members joined together in solidarity Tuesday as part of a campus-wide unity walk.

The event was hosted by Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies and La Alianza, with the walk led by Leo Warbington ’22. The purpose of the event was to bring the campus together and promote equality, diversity, and inclusion, in efforts to fight racism, homophobia, xenophobia, and all other forms of hate.

“We have to emphasize and practice these values,” Warbington said, addressing participants outside of the MXIBS ahead of the walk, which continued on the mall. “There is no room for hate at Wabash College.”

Students carried signs during the unity walk that displayed positive messages and images that show support toward equality.“Diversity, equity, and inclusion is something very important, and for the Latinx communities, we feel it,” added Jonathan Silva-Melendez ’24, president of La Alianza. “We all have to be there for each other, always. Seeing all of you here, supporting us — all I can say is, muchas gracias hermanos!”

As the crowd marched, they held flags and handmade signs that read, “Black Lives Matter,” “Address your bias,” and “We are all brothers.” Chants echoed around the mall during the walk as participants also repeated phrases including, “The people united will never be defeated,” and “We are one Wabash.”

“As we always say, Wabash fights. Not just on the sports fields, but in the classrooms. We fight discrimination. We fight racism. We fight bias,” said Allen Johnson Jr. ’23. “We fight for everything that we deserve as minorities, as LGBTQ+ members and as Wabash students.”
