A study of the evolution of musical styles and genres from the mid-18th to the beginning of the 20th century. The first half of the course focuses on composers (Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven) who transformed musical style in sonata, symphony, concerto, chamber music, opera, and sacred music. The second half of the course covers major works and significant styles ranging from Schubert to Mahler. This course is offered in the spring semester.
