A survey of nontraditional African art from the early 20th century until present. The course will follow early modern art movements, which developed as a response to colonialism, missionary presence and rapid urbanization. It will then examine the period of decolonization and the end of Apartheid and how this influence art around the continent. The course will also look at the postmodern global art movement that started in the late 20th century and how African artists have responded to the world stage.
