Wabash Baseball Opens 2-1 in Georgia

The Wabash College baseball team opened the 2003 season with a pair of wins in its trip to Georgia over the weekend. The Little Giants came away with a pair of victories over Oglethorpe University on Sunday after dropping the season opener against LaGrange College on Saturday.

Wabash claimed its first win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Oglethorpe on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Bill Goff (Brownsburg, IN/Brownsburg) held Oglethorpe to two runs over six innings of work to earn his first victory of the season. Goff gave up only two hits and one earned run while striking out two. Senior Marc Rowe (West Point, IN/McCutcheon) came on to pitch the seventh inning to earn his first save of the season.

The Little Giants scored all of their runs in the second inning. Two scored on a Jared Martin (Rosedale, IN/Riverton Parke) double with one out in the top of fourth. Martin came around to score on a passed ball two batters later. Danny Schubert (Lebanon, IL/Lebanon) brought home the final run of the game for the Little Giants on a sacrifice fly that scored junior Dan Matusik (Highlands, IN/Highland).

Freshman Travis Moore (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) got his first win in a Wabash uniform in the final game of the trip with a 6-3 victory over Oglethorpe. A solo home run by Mike Mack (Butler, IN/Eastside) gave Wabash a 1-0 lead in the second. The Little Giants plated two more runs in the third before blowing the game open in the fourth. Senior Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) clobbered a three-run homer to give the Little Giants a 6-1 lead. Martin came in for Moore in the fifth inning to earn his first save of the season. Moore pitched 4-1/3 innings, striking out five.

Wabash lost 12-2 against LaGrange on Saturday. The game was the first of the season for the Little Giants. LaGrange entered the contest with ten games under its belt already this season. Freshman Jared Bogan (Struthers, OH/Struthers) plated the first Little Giant run of the year in the third inning, leading off the inning with a double and coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Justin VanderIest (Hudsonville, MI/Hudsonville). Wabash scored its other run in the ninth inning when Goff scored on a Nick Rico (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) single.

Wabash will travel to Florida this weekend to begin a week of play during Spring Break at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
