Baseball Team Swept By OWU

For the second straight day the Wabash baseball team battled with Ohio Wesleyan early, only to see the strong bats of the Bishops come to life in the third inning to take a 15-2 to sweep the three-game series against the Little Giants.

Trailing 2-0 after two innings, Wabash left fielder Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) singled through the right side of the infield with one away. Martin then raced to third when Ohio Wesleyan’s pick-off attempt was thrown away. Martin scored when Matt Wilhelm (Wabash, IN/Southwood) smacked a single up the middle to cut the lead to one.

The Bishops came up with a big inning in the bottom of the third, scoring six after Wabash could not turn a double play with the bases loaded and nobody out. Wabash mounted a rally in the eighth inning, plating a run in the inning to cut into the Bishops’ lead. Wilhelm reached base after being hit by a pitch, moved to third on a double by Frank Harmon (Avon, IN/Avon). Wilhelm scored when shortstop Matt Carlson (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) hit a flyball to centerfield.

Wabash falls to 9-24 with the loss. The Little Giants will play their final games of the season this weekend at Mud Hollow Field. They will play host to Denison in a two-game set on Saturday, and a final nine-inning game on Sunday.
