Little Giants Drop Rubber Game Against Earlham

Wabash completed its three-game series with Earlham College on Wednesday night, losing an 8-2 decision to the Quakers.

After a two-run first inning by the Quakers, Wabash starter Shawn Morris (Portland, IN/Jay County) shut down the Earlham hitters through the next three innings. Wabash nearly tied the game in the fourth inning after a Matt Carlson (Crawfordsville, IN/Crawfordsville) single brought third baseman Abe Honegger (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) to the plate. The freshman crushed a ball down the left field line that just to the foul side of the pole for a long strike. Honegger eventually drew a walk, but Wabash couldn't bring the runs home and finished the inning still down two runs.

The Little Giants tied the game in the fifth inning when left fielder Jake Martin (Rushville, IN/Rushville) reached second on a base hit to left that was bobbled by the Earlham left fielder. Consecutive walks to Matt Wilhelm (Wabash, IN/Southwood) and Phil McCaulay (Ft. Wayne, IN/Ft. Wayne Southside) and an error at first on a grounder by Scott Adams (Avon, IN/Avon) brought the first Wabash run home. Carlson brought the second run home with his second hit of the game to even the score at 2-2.

The Quakers came up with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer to take the lead again. Earlham also plated four more runs in the sixth inning to record the win. Wabash had several chances to score in the late innings, but stranded 14 runners throughout the ballgame.

The Little Giants are 7-17, 2-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. They will play host to Thomas More College on Saturday afternoon at Mud Hollow Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
