Davidson Breaks Wabash Career Scoring Record In Win Over Wooster

Eclipses Estelle's All-Time Record of 2,065 Career Points

A driving layup with 9:09 left in Sunday's Wabash basketball game versus Wooster gave the Little Giants two more points. But for senior guard Jack Davidson that basket made him the all-time scoring leader in the history of Wabash hoops.

Davidson passed the previous record of 2.065 career points scored by All-American guard Josh Estelle from 1996-2000. Davidson and Estelle are the only two players in program history to score more than 2,000 career points.

Davidson finished the game against Wooster with 31 points to lead the Little Giants past the visiting Scots by a final score of 94-80. The two teams entered the day in first and second place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. The victory, the 11th consecutive win for Wabash, improved the Little Giants record to 15-3 overall with a 10-1 mark in NCAC games. Wooster owns a 13-6 overall record and is tied for second place in the NCAC with Ohio Wesleyan (12-7, 9-3 NCAC).

Wabash fell behind early as Wooster took an eight-point lead in the first five minutes of the game. Davidson sparked an 8-0 Wabash run with a pair of three-point baskets before Kellen Schreiber tied the game with two free throws at 16-16. Wooster ended that run with a basket from Najee Hardaway before Schreiber drew the Little Giants back to a point with a putback basket for a 19-18 Scots lead.

Davidson scored the next points for Wabash on driving layup and free throw to give the Little Giants their first lead at 21-19. Once again Wooster answered with a 5-0 run to retake the lead, 24-21. This time it was Edreece Redmond who tied the score with a three-point basket off a pass from Davidson.

With all eyes in the stands on Davidson and his pursuit of the record, it was junior Ahmoni Jones who took the game in hand. Jones scored seven straight points over the next two minutes to put Wabash up 31-28. His play sparked a 20-6 scoring run for Wabash that put the Little Giants up 14 with 4:17 left in the first half. Wabash expanded the lead to 16 just before the break before a Jamir Billings half-court shot ahead of the buzzer trimmed the Little Giants' lead to 51-38 at halftime.

Wabash struggled to score once again at the start of the second half as Wooster got the lead to as close as five points at 53-48. Once again it was Jones who answered for Wabash with a driving layup that started an 11-4 run that allowed the Little Giants to regain a 12-point lead with 13:16 left to play.

Wooster got as close to five points once more in the final period, cutting the score to 70-65 at the eight-minute mark, but the Little Giants held Wooster scoreless from the field over the next 2:25 for an 11-1 scoring run and an 81-65 lead. Wabash maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the half to secure its 11th consecutive victory.

Jones finished with a career-best 28 points. The junior forward shot 10-of-15 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. He and Vinny Buccilla each grabbed five rebounds to lead the Little Giants in that category.

Schreiber added 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting while connecting on 6-of-7 free throws. Redmond scored seven points in his second start of the weekend and gave out a game-high five assists.

Hardaway led Wooster with 20 points. Turner Kurt scored 17 for the Scots and grabbed a team-best 11 boards. Billings finished with 11 points.

Wabash shot 28-of-52 from the field (53.8 percent) and hit eight three-point shots. The Little Giants left some points at the free throw line. Wabash came into the game shooting 81.4 percent from the stripe but connected on just 30-of-40 shots for 75 percent for the game. Both teams spent plenty of time at the free throw line due to 56 fouls called in the contest. The Scots shot 21-of-28 from the free throw line for 75 percent. Wooster went 26-of-64 from the field (40.6 percent) and 7-of-23 from three-point range (30.4 percent).

Wabash is off until next Friday when it plays the first of another set of back-to-back games. The Little Giants play Allegheny College at home at 6 p.m. Friday followed by a 4 p.m. Saturday game against Hiram College.
