Polytan Invitational Results
Jake Waterman set a new Wabash record and posted the fastest 800-meter time in Division III this season. The Wabash junior outraced scholarship athletes from Indiana, Kentucky, Notre Dame, and other Division I programs to win the event at the Polytan Invitational at Indiana University on Sunday.
Waterman crossed the finish line in 1:48.64, nearly two seconds quicker than the 1:50.43 turned in by Indiana University's De'Sean Turner. A total of 29 athletes participated in the event, consisting primarily of Division I runners. Waterman's time tops the Division III performance list by nearly one second. St. Thomas runner Mike Hutton ran a 1:49.45 earlier in the week at the 54th Annual Mt. SAC Relays.
Kevin McCarthy also turned in a new school record with his performance in the 1500-meter run on Friday night at the Polytan meet. He finished sixth overall with a time of 3:47.20, the second-quickest time in the nation this season by a Division III athlete. McCarthy trailed Indiana's Andrew Bayer (3:41.17), Jeremiah Vaughan from Indiana State (3:45.23), Daniel Stockberger from Indiana (3:46.14), and Tecumseh Adams from Central Michigan (3:46.83). Matt Turlip from NYU ran the fastest Division III 1500-meter time earlier this year by posting a 3:46.81 at the Raleigh Relays in March.
McCarthy also ran his quickest time of the season in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing third with a time of 9:05.36. That time is the fifth-quickest in the nation this season for Division III athletes.
