| Course Section Number: | PPE-329-02 |
| Department: | Philosophy, Politics, Economic |
| Description: | This course will carry out a close reading of Plato's Republic. In this foundational work of ethics and political philosophy, Plato addresses fundamental questions about justice and the proper order of the city and the soul by imagining an ideal city. In addition to thinking through these fundamental questions with Plato, we will consider the lasting relevance of the work for understanding ethical and political life and reflect on what it means to interpret and appropriate classical texts for a present historical moment. To that end, while focusing on Plato's text, we will also study a few important interpretations of the Republic, including interpretations that highlight how it has been treated historically as a site of ideological contestation.
