| Description: | American Muscle is a course tracing the history of the automobile in the United States. Beginning in the nineteenth-century with the proliferation of rail lines and public transportation and concluding with the recession of the American auto industry in the late twentieth century, this course aims to familiarize students with some of the rapid changes that characterized post-Civil War American history via a focus specifically on automobiles. Blending technological, social, cultural, and economic history, this course seeks to both provide a comprehensive vision of the rise and fall of American car manufacturing while also delving into the cultural significance of cars to Americans and Indianans specifically. |
