Title: Business of Entertainment
Course Section Number: HIS-200-01
Department: History
Description: How did entertainment become the mass-producing, globe-spanning industry we know today? In this course, we'll trace entertainment's commercialization across two centuries, beginning with the professionalization of theater in the 1700s and ending with the Hollywood studio system. Focusing on Brazil, France, and the United States, we will examine how performers, producers, repertoire, and regulations circulated across borders and alongside imperialism and urbanization. We'll analyze primary and scholarly sources to understand the changing economic and social functions of entertainment, including the scandals and riots that challenged its expansion.
