| Description: | Abolitionism and Anticolonialism in the French-Speaking World How did French-speakers view American debates on freedom and racial equality? How did they articulate oppositions to slavery and colonial oppression happening in their own cultures and across the French-speaking world? In this course, we will study how authors and artists from within French-speaking communities advanced the causes of abolitionism and anticolonialism in their scholarly and creative works. The materials that we will encounter will include voices from areas such as metropolitan France, Senegal, the Caribbean, and French-speaking Canada and range in expression from fiction and non-fiction literature to film and music. For example, we will analyze some of the significant contributions of French-speaking Afro-descendant and African intellectual figures, like Frantz Fanon and Achille Mbembe, to international discussions on race and power. Together, we will compare and contrast varied perspectives in terms of time and space and how they work to challenge oppressions happening within the French-speaking world itself and outside of it. This course will be taught in English, and we will use English translations of French texts or other subtitled media. Those taking the course for credit towards the French major or minor will be expected to do applicable readings and written assignments in French.
