| Description: | This is a course on theology focusing on the relation of the "natural" world to God. For most of human history, people needed to think of their protection from the threats of the natural world: its storms, its sun, its droughts, and so on. But today the arrow of influence has changed. The world needs to be protected from the human being: its waste, its combustion engines, its pollution. Ecotheology examines ways that religious faith shapes, strengthens, sometimes undercuts, and always affects efforts at living humanely in the natural world. "Oikos", from which the prefix "eco-" comes means "home", and some attention will be given in class to the ways that "home" can function theologically at a moment of global climate crisis. Students should register under the REL number for it to count as REL. Students should register under the ENS number for it to count as ENS. |
