| Department: | Education Studies |
| Description: | This course examines adolescent literacy through the lens of the Science of Reading (SOR) and includes a brief overview of early literacy development to establish a foundation for understanding how literacy skills develop in grades 4-12 as they transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." During this stage, students are expected to apply and expand their literacy skills as they encounter increasingly complex vocabulary, texts, comprehension tasks, fluency demands, and writing expectations. Throughout the semester, students will engage with a variety of literacy materials, including fiction, nonfiction, discipline-specific textbooks, and nontraditional and digital formats such as fan fiction, podcasts, and blogs. Students will identify and analyze the literacy demands and potential barriers associated with different genres and formats, with particular attention to vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing. The course addresses the needs of a diverse range of learners, including general education students, English language learners, students requiring literacy interventions, and students with other educational needs. Special attention will be given to integrating literacy instruction into discipline-specific classrooms and helping content-area educators support students' literacy development while teaching discipline knowledge. The course will also explore how literacy is evolving in an increasingly digital and multimodal world, including the opportunities and challenges presented by new forms of reading, writing, and communication. Open to any student; meets the curriculum and pedagogy requirement for Education Studies minors. |
