| Course Section Number: | ECO-277-02 |
| Department: | Economics |
| Description: | This course provides an introduction to the economics of education. Its central theme is the formation of human capital, from early childhood through K-12 and beyond, and how it shapes both schooling outcomes and later-life outcomes such as wages, unemployment, and crime. Particular attention is paid to inequality: why students from different socioeconomic backgrounds perform differently on achievement tests, and what can be done to close these gaps. The course also evaluates education policies and interventions in the US and abroad, including school funding, teacher quality, class size, and school choice. Throughout the semester, students will read and discuss research articles and develop an intuitive understanding of how economists measure the causal effects of education policies. |
