| Department: | Economics |
| Description: | Why is Argentina no longer among the most developed countries in the world? Why are the Irish richer than Americans? Why can some African countries not afford the vaccinations they need? These are the types of questions we will explore in this class. They clearly indicate that economic growth is absolutely central to our material well-being (and sometimes not only material well-being). We will study the most important determinants of economic growth, paying special attention to technological progress and productivity. We will also consider alternative economic policies designed to improve human material well-being. By analyzing historical datasets and cross-country comparisons, we will learn about the cultural and institutional context of economic growth. This will be an extremely interactive class utilizing a broad set of pedagogical approaches to explore what truly matters for our communal welfare in the long run. |
