| Title: | Rhetoric, Sound, and Music |
|---|---|
| Course Section Number: | MUS-204-01 |
| Department: | Music |
| Description: | Can chords persuade an audience? Why might the ambient sounds in coffee shops inspire us to be productive? In what ways does music bring communities together? How do podcasts weave together sound, music, and language to explore civic issues? This course will introduce students to rhetorical theories and analyses of sound and music in order to answer these and related questions. We will explore artifacts such as pop music, orchestral music, ambient noise, natural soundscapes, digital remixes, podcasts, listening practices, and the voices (or lack thereof) of rhetors themselves. Students will complete a research project on sound and/or music using both traditional modalities for academic work (e.g., writing, oral presentation) as well as sonic modalities (e.g., podcasting, remix). Students should sign up under the MUS number if they want it to count towards MUS. Students should sign up under the RHE number if they want it to count towards RHE. |
