Title: Ancient Athletics
Course Section Number: CLA-113-01
Department: Classics
Description: From the first Olympic Games to the bloodsport of the Roman Colosseum, competition and spectacle were inseparable from the cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome. Athletics were embedded in the religious, political, and cultural landscape of Greece, both uniting city-states under the Olympic Truce and a Panhellenic identity, and providing space to one-up each other in physical prowess, monumental building, and victory songs. The Romans popularized the arena where professional gladiators, condemned criminals, and persecuted Christians fought and died for the entertainment of the masses. This course examines the cultural ideals, athletic practices, professional standards, community identities, and human costs of ancient sports with an emphasis on comparisons to modern athletics. Ultimately we aim to answer the simple question: what can we learn about a society from its sports? CLA-113-01 is for FR, SO and JR only. If you are a FR, SO, or JR sign up under the 01 section. If you are a senior, sign up under the 01SR section.
