Title: Governing Wabash
Course Section Number: BLS-280-02
Department: Black Studies
Description: NEW COURSE pending final approval by faculty on 11/3/2026. We often refer to Wabash College as a community - and, like in any community, the College's politics and governance play an important role in shaping the experiences of its members. In this course we'll examine how Wabash is governed; that is, we'll explore the variety of institutions and processes that help produce decisions for the College community, from the Board of Trustees and faculty meetings to campus activism and student government. Through reading, discussion, meetings with key figures in Wabash College governance, research in the College archives, and other activities, we'll delve into specific instances of communal decision-making from the 1830s to the present to understand why Wabash operates as it does, how historical events have shaped the College's development, how certain campus traditions came into being (and why some have disappeared), and the ways in which Wabash's governance practices hinder and promote equity and inclusion. Students who want it to count as BLS, should sign up under the BLS number. Students who want it to count as PSC, should sign up under the PSC number.
