| Description: | When Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15th, 44 BCE, he left a godlike legacy and a gaping power vacuum. The man who emerged from a decade of civil war as Rome's first emperor was the least likely candidate - Caesar's sickly nephew Octavian, who eventually took the name Augustus. This course traces Augustus' rise to power, refoundation of Rome, and propaganda campaign, with major topics including Roman warfare, epic poetry, monumental architecture, new artistic models, and political revolution. We will investigate how and why the Roman Republic fell, how Augustus built and maintained his power, and what legacy the first emperor of Rome left behind. Key to the course is Vergil's Aeneid, Rome's national epic linking the Age of Augustus to the city's mythic foundations. |
