| Title: | Black People in Latin America |
|---|---|
| Course Section Number: | HIS-350-01 |
| Department: | History |
| Description: | Approximately eleven million people from Africa arrived as enslaved people to Latin America due to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and another set arrived as part of the European conquistadores. This fact alone reflects the diversity of life experiences of peoples understood as diasporic Africans or Black within Latin America. Furthermore, the history of these Africans and their descendants as well as the larger Black diaspora in Latin America is critical to understanding the histories of freedom, citizenship, democracy, and race in the region. In this course, students will read secondary sources as well as primary sources produced by and about Black Latin Americans to gain an understanding of the histories of Black peoples in Latin America from colonization to the twentieth century.
