Title: A Century of German Cinema
Course Section Number: ART-219-01
Department: Art
Description: German filmmakers of the early 20th century were among the first to see film as an art medium rather than light entertainment, and many films that they produced in the interwar Weimar Era remain classics of world cinema. The Nazi regime effectively subverted film into propaganda, but a young generation of post-WWII filmmakers founded the New German Cinema and reinvigorated film as a serious form of art expression. The Reunification of East and West Germany in 1990 empowered a new wave of German directors to explore previously off-limits topics from Germany's fractious history. And today, German filmmakers continue to portray the complexities of a contemporary multicultural Germany. In this course, representative films from the Weimar era through the 2020s will serve as points of departure for discussion and analysis of German cultural history. We will approach the films both visually and textually in an attempt to grasp the relationship between a film and the culture in which it is created. All films will be shown in their original German versions with English intertitles or subtitles. Register for this under the ART number if you want it to count towards ART. Register for this under the GER number if you want it to count towards GER.
