Title: Modern Chinese Literature

Description: This course introduces major trends in twentieth and twenty-first century Chinese literature, including works from mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. All readings are in English translation, and knowledge of Chinese is NOT expected. We trace the development of realism and its alternatives, including speculative genres like martial arts fiction and science fiction. We consider political uses of literature as a tool of state power, popular resistance, both, or neither. We explore how modern and contemporary Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong literature has engaged in debates of nationalism, individualism, gender equality, the rural/urban divide, environmentalism, historical memory, and more. No prerequisites.
