Title: Korean Popular Culture

Description: From media like Squid Game and Parasite to music groups like Blackpink and BTS, the Korean Wave has taken the world by storm. This half-credit course considers the production, circulation, and consumption of Korean popular culture as a global phenomenon. We analyze and contextualize popular music, film, television, literature, material culture, and cuisine. Special attention is paid to new media forms, soft power, and transnational networks of cultural exchange. All readings in English. Meets during the second half-semester. See ASI-112 Martial Arts Film for the first half-semester course. Counts as an elective for Film and Digital Media. No prerequisites.
