| Description: | Rel-280-01: Topics in American Religion: Sects and Cults in America. This course investigates the beliefs and practices of new, marginal, and dissenting American religious groups, which are often labeled "sects" or "cults." We will draw upon the sociology of religion to understand these terms and new religious movements and reformist groups in general. Primarily, we will focus on the history, theology, and practices of groups such as Mormons, Pentecostals, Branch Davidians, the Peoples Temple, and Scientology. One course credit. No prerequisites. |
