| Description: | Culture, Criticism, and Cartoons: Publishing Like a New Yorker Amanda Ingram has been teaching at Wabash for 14 years and is a botanist, a native of Virginia, a devoted fan of Wabash basketball, and a dedicated reader of The New Yorker. Are you interested in politics, science, sports, business, the arts, humor, food, or personal histories? Then this is the tutorial for you! The New Yorker is a weekly magazine known for its brilliant writing, wide-ranging coverage, and amusing (if sometimes mystifying) cartoons, and we'll spend the semester reading articles, analyzing them to understand how great writing is constructed, and discussing whatever fascinating content the magazine sends our way. Students will write a range of articles in The New Yorker style, including gossipy "Talk of the Town" pieces, personal histories, criticism, and news commentary, culminating in a Wabash College-focused magazine of our own. |
