Northwest Photo Album

a man in a green shirt

I have lots of pictures of each of the alums I visited in July 2008. This one is my favorites. One of the highlights of my time with Dan Schenk was a talking tour of the sprawling Nike Campus in Beaverton, just outside Portland.

a man pointing at a door

Bob Chamness is an enthusiastic guy. Though the tour around his office was - well, an office - it didn't dampen his excitement in telling the Digimarc story.

a man wearing glasses and a black shirt

Nate Clark and I met at a brewpub where his art was on display. It was a new place that was packed on a weeknight evening. I was impressed with how reflective Nate was about his art and living in the Northwest. You can read his story on the web in our 39 UNDER 39 features.

a man in a suit and tie

I really like this photo of Dr. David Avery. He was telling me a story I relate in the magazine. It was about this point in the conversation he quipped "Benjamin Franklin was a very wise man." Take a look at the magazine for the reference. The twinkle in his eye was priceless.

men standing next to each other

I was able to interview Mike Gallagher when he was here for Big Bash '09. I traveled up to Vancouver when I was in the Northwest. This photo with Mike and Dr. Dennis Krause was special because the professor's office was partially funded by a Gallagher gift to Wabash.

a man standing in front of a sign

Andrew Naugle is just fun. He tells a great story about being asked at cocktail parties what he does for a living. Then laughs in sharing that helping insurance companies make more money isn't the best of light conversation.

a couple of men posing for a picture

Naugle had this photo in mind before I got there. Andrew hired John Kasey '08 during the summer just weeks before my visit. We went up to the Queen Anne area for this marvelous view of downtown Seattle and Mt. Ranier. The only problem was on this hazy day, you could barely make out the outline of the huge mountain.

I had to a double take when I met Mike Wells at Intel at a Portland suburb. He had a rather full goatee when he was on campus for Bash. Read Mike's story online in our 39 UNDER 39 features. He couldn't give me much of a tour because of security at the computer chip manufacturer, but he did give me some recommendations on Willammette Valley wineries.

a man in a suit and tie standing in front of a house

Lee Grogg is standing in the middle of the Ryther campus in this photo. Grogg has contagious enthusiasm for his work. We did this walk while he shared the long history of Ryther and talked about  the home's services.

a man smiling at the camera

I can't think of too many people I've met in my long career I would describe as 'delightful." But Bob Witherspoon was one of the most delightful gentlemen I've ever met. His life is a definition of the liberal arts with his significant career in medicine, interest in language and music, sailing and flying.

a river with a mountain and trees

I wrote a significant portion of this issue of Wabash Magazine and had published quite a few photos. Here are a couple I like that didn't make it any where. I loved the Columbia River Gorge drive. This photo does not do it justice but it was my first real stop where I could get a shot. Earlier in the drive closer the cliffs on each side are much bigger.

a field of green plants

I usually don't do artsy, but I was at the top of one of the many hills in the Dundee Hills of the Willammette Valley when I took this vineyard shot. The famous wine producing area is not quite an hour out of Portland.
