Smit Reaches Qualifying Mark with Third-Place Finish at Indy

Wabash senior Jared Smit (Lafayette, IN/Central Catholic) reached the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark on Saturday with a third-place finish in the 10,000-meter run at the Gerald England Track and Field Invitational at Indianapolis.

Smit toured the track in 31:36.02 to take third place out of 16 runners. He is the first Little Giant runner to reach the provisional qualifying time to participate in the NCAA Championship Track and Field meet.

Fellow senior Darren Green (Dallas, TX/South Texas HS for Health Professions) took fifth place out of a field of 34 runners in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.07. He was the top Division III finisher. Green also took fifth in the 400-meter dash (51.02). Sophomore Dan Ruge (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton) was fourth in the 1,500-meter run (4:04.82), and junior Peter DeYoung (Evansville, IN/Bosse) took fifth in the triple jump (41' 8").
