Dr. Cheryl E. Ball, a leader in the study of digital media and publishing, will present a public lecture at Wabash College at 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, in Baxter Hall room 101. The title of her talk is “Digital Publishing as a Liberal Art.”

Dr. Ball is Associate Professor of Digital Publishing Studies at West Virginia University and editor of Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, Pedagogy.  She was a Fulbright Scholar in Norway at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design in 2013-14, and has received sizable grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Dr. Ball is a frequent columnist for Inside Higher Ed on topics that include surviving the academic job market.  She is the co-author of The New Work of ComposingRAW: Reading and Writing New Media, and numerous textbooks and journal articles on writing, technology, and hybrid teaching strategies.

Dr. Ball’s talk will address how reading and writing changed with the expansion of digital modes of communication in the 20th century. Looking forward, she will argue that interdisciplinary training, like the liberal arts curriculum offered at Wabash and similar colleges, gives students the skills to communicate in both the short and long forms of writing they will need to be successful readers and writers the 21st century.

The talk is free and open to the public. A reception is scheduled to follow.
