2011 Wabash Day: NW Indiana

October 25, 2011

Jason Androff, Wabash Class of 2000, had this to say about the NWI Wabash Day that took place on October 15, 2011:  "Early Saturday morning I decided to volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity Restore in Gary, across the street from Calumet High School. It's nice to know that an organization exists to help lower income families afford homes when so many can't afford them.

I met Scott McEuen who coordinated the entire affair, and even got us a free Wabash hat. I met two other Wallies (Adam Tavitas and Douglas Shelbourne) for a day of back breaking labor! We started out unloading donations of chairs and appliances from the Habitat truck. Next, we headed to the attic to recover some Christmas decorations for the upcoming season. After sorting Christmas trees, snowmen, and ornaments, we all decided to take a Dunkin Donuts break and reminisce about days of yore at good old Wabash. I have to say my favorite Wabash flashback came from Scott relating to us about how he went to Europe during the Cold War era to sing as a baritone with the Wabash Glee Club.

Hey, thanks to everyone that came out, and Scott for organizing an interesting morning."

In addition to Jason Androff, '00, Adam Tavitas, '91 and Douglas Shelbourne, '76 and his wife Lorraine showed up to give us a glimpse of that Wabash 'can-do' spirit. The volunteer work was fruitful and will guarantee the Restore a very successful Christmas Open House scheduled for Saturday, November 5, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The Christmas ornaments that were collected from the attic and sorted by us will be on display during the open house and available for purchase. There will be one special that day: 20% off any ONE item. The Restore will also have cookies and hot chocolate for purchase. I hope to see some Wabash alums attend to show their support!

The Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana Restore is located at 6114 W. Ridge Road, Gary, Indiana 46408, across the street from Calumet High School and next door to Menard's. Volunteers are always welcome, and if you, your family, friends, neighbors, church group, or social group would like to volunteer, please contact John Disco at (219)923-7265. He coordinates the volunteer groups. Please also remember that donations of furniture, appliances, home decor, doors, windows, etc. are always welcome. All we ask is that the donated items be in fairly good condition and operational. If you are unable to drop off the items, we have a large, box truck that will pick up the items at your location. Please call (219)923-7265 and ask for Danielle. She schedules the truck pick ups.

Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana has ongoing building projects that it sponsors itself or in collaboration with such organizations as the Gary, Indiana Catholic Diocese, Department of Agriculture, etc. If you are interested in participating in an upcoming home build, please contact John Disco at (219)923-7265. He will be able to provide information about the upcoming builds and building schedules.

Finally, it's always a pleasure meeting with and talking to Wabash College alums. This occasion was no different. The conversations always bring back fond memories of my 4 years attending Wabash. They were "my best four years!"
