Assistant Technical Director

The Wabash College Department of Theater invites applications for a part-time Assistant Technical Director to collaborate with the Scenic Designer/Technical Director and faculty directors, and to mentor a diverse undergraduate student population. Candidates with experience in Lighting Design are encouraged to apply, and a successful candidate with that experience would also gain the title Resident Lighting Designer. This is a 10-month part-time hourly position that begins in August, 2026. The position is continuing, based on periodic performance reviews and Department and College needs and circumstances. We seek a technician–artist with an interest in working in a liberal-arts context. A B.A. in Theater or commensurate experience is required. An M.F.A. in Lighting Design is required for possible teaching opportunities.
Responsibilities include:
- Supervise the operations of the Department of Theater Scenic Studio to ensure an organized, efficient and safe environment for the purposes of theatrical production and student education.
- Work with the Technical Director to oversee, instruct, and supervise student employees and contract labor as required to complete work within budgetary guidelines.
- Work with the Technical Director to maintain all scenic, paint, props, and lighting shop machinery, tools, inventory, and stock.
For candidates with qualifications in lighting design, additional responsibilities would include:
- Design the stage lighting of three mainstage productions per academic year.
- Oversee, instruct, and supervise student employees in the implementation of all lighting systems within budgetary guidelines.
- Teach a course in lighting design periodically, depending on candidate qualifications and the needs of the College and the department.
