| Description: | FACE TO FACE COURSE. FRT-101-01: Sports and The Law: Mascots, Money, and Monopolies Matt Tanney '05 is Director of Athletics and Campus Wellness, and returned to Wabash in 2018. He previously worked in several NCAA Division I athletics departments, including The Ohio State University and the University of Oklahoma. Tanney earned his Juris Doctor at Indiana University's McKinney School of Law. He resides in Crawfordsville with his wife Julia and twin daughters. The course explores complicated cultural issues through the lens of sports and the law, such as multi-million-dollar athletics departments on college campuses, the evolution of gender equality in society through athletics participation, and current legal sports issues in the headlines. Should elite college athletes receive compensation for their name, image, and likeness? How do we define amateurism? Does legalized sports wagering affect the integrity of the game? The class will travel to the NCAA National Office in Indianapolis during the semester. |
