| Description: | Everyone knows that Oedipus killed his father and married his mother, but fewer people know who Sophocles is and that he wrote a famous play about these events. In this class we will trace the mysterious history of the tragic genre, which was a specifically Athenian invention flowering in the 5th century B.C., through reading selected plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Our goal will be to see how these authors used mythological characters and narratives to create literary works that summarize in a highly concentrated way the nature of the human condition and the dark entanglements that are an integral part of it. The first few classes will provide information about history and methods of approaching the texts, but the central purpose is for students to discuss the tragedies and bring their individual reactions to the issues they find there. There will be regular quizzes, two short papers, and a final examination. |
