| Description: | Deliberation is a process through which public conversations occur and decisions can be made. During deliberation, citizens come together, share opinions, critique arguments and reasons, expand their understanding and perspective, and ultimately, seek to make public choices about pressing problems in their community. In this course, we will explore the theories and practices of democratic deliberation, evaluate the potentials for and limits of deliberation, and discuss and evaluate framing and facilitation techniques in diverse settings such as community meetings, strategic planning, and business. Assignments will include practice facilitations and deliberations, public facilitations, theory response papers, and a deliberation project. This class qualifies as a Language Studies credit. One course credit. This course is enrolled through permission of the instructor. Prerequisites: none. |
