Title: Materiality and Embodiment
Course Section Number: REL-373-01
Department: Religion
Description: REL-373 - Topics in Theology: Materiality and Embodiment. This class will study the history and theology of physicality. Is physicality to be contrasted with spirituality? How can the body of Jesus of Nazareth be incarnated by the Divine Logos, as Christians claim? If the material world has been ennobled by God's presence in it, as the early church asserted, not relegated to mere materiality as their Gnostic opponents seemed to teach, what should be the attendant view of the physical world and its bodies today? The implications of a theology of materiality for environmental issues as well as technological ones (such as mass production, virtual reality and artificial intelligence) may also be considered. Pre-requisite: one previous course in theology (REL 173 or REL 370).
