| Description: | Race to the Moon Wally Novak is a biochemist who loves astronomy and space exploration. Race to the Moon - October 4, 1957 marks the start of the space race. The Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik sparked fear in the minds of Americans and threatened our national security. Sputnik was followed by a series of space firsts by the Soviet Union and the U.S. struggled to keep up. The U.S. desperately needed a major win, and in 1961 President John F. Kennedy challenged the nation to land a man on the moon and safely return him home. Students taking this course will examine both the technology and the personalities behind the race to the moon (1957 - 1969), and how the recent privatization of space exploration (Space X, Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, etc.) has affected the space program and the next space race.to Mars. |
