June 19, 2009 was the scheduled return of Kerry Wood and Mark DeRosa to Chicago's north side with the visiting Cleveland Indians. It also marked the day of the annual Cubs game outing hosted by the Wabash Club of Chicago. Thanks to the organization of Eric Schoettle '93, the WCC was able to secure 100 tickets for the interleague game between the two teams and all 100 were sold.
A return to John Barleycorn for pre-game festivities after a year hiatis, didn't prevent rain, and lots of it, from blowing through the Windy City during the morning hours, but as game time approached the skies cleared and a beautiful day for baseball developed.
The first pitch was thrown later than scheduled, but it didn't take long for the Indians to get on the scoreboard taking a 7-0 lead after four innings. Wabash alumni, friends, and family attending the event had a great time (see photos here) despite the early game woes by the Cubs and were finally given something to cheer about in the late innings cutting the lead to 1 run after 8 innings. The Kerry Wood return was then spoiled in the bottom of the 9th inning as Derek Lee's homerun off him tied the game allowing the Cubs to win the game in extra innings.
The WCC invites you to particpate in its golf outing scheduled for Monday, August 10. Details can be found at www.wabash.edu/alumni/ra/wcc.
