Portland's Neighborhoods

a long shot of a building

The Pearl District is the city's most famous area known for its shopping and trendy restaurants, galleries and shops. As you can see here the area was once a warehousing district - great urban renewal!

Fun decorations highlight this latino clothing store.

a grocery store with lots of vegetables

There is a huge Whole Foods store in the Pearl that features nothing but organically grown produce and eco-friendly foods.

barrels of barrels with paintings on them

Urban Wineworks is well known in wine circles around the area. Visitors are encouraged to try to blend their own wine with a combination for Cabernet, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Then for $22 they can take home a bottle of their blend. The entire store is decorated with wine barrells painted by local artists.

a row of houses with stairs and trees

Portland is a city of districts and neighborhoods - The Pearl, the Rose District, and the Alphabet District. This row of homes in the Alphabet are quite typical. The neighorhood is a unique blend of residentail and small retail. The streets in the area fall in alphabetical order!

pink umbrellas on top of a wall

The umbrellas outside Saint Cupcake sort of look like coconut on top a cupcake - don't they?

a man looking at a display of cupcakes

Mmmmmm - cupcakes!

a group of people walking past a storefront

One of the Peal's biggest stars - Powell's Books - the biggest bookstore in the world. It takes up an entire city block!

a bicycle with flowers on it

Portland is a very eco-friendly city and one that has it's battles over keeping it that way. The green pavement is a bike path on a city street near my hotel. The bike is a monument to a fallen biker.

a flower bed with many flowers

It doesn't take long to figure out why Portland is called the Rose City, the buds are everywhere. These wild roses grown along an interstate off ramp and you see them lining most of the major thoroughfares through the city.
