Freshmen Take Consolation Title at Kalamazoo Tennis Tourney

Wabash freshmen Nate Koelper and Wade Miller recovered from an opening round doubles loss to win their final three matches in the Kalamazoo Collegiate Tournament portion of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Central Region Tournament. The event was held at Kalamazoo College. The duo finished the weekend with a record of 3-1 for the tournament.
Koepler and Miller lost their first doubles match 8-5 to Joe Collins and Pierce Stemler from DePauw. Koepler and Miller moved into the consolation bracket, where the duo scored an 8-4 victory against North Central College’s Andrew McKinley and Eric Mutka.
The draw put teammates against each other in quarterfinal round. Koepler and Miller faced Wabash freshman Phil Kubisz and Adrian College player Austin Boyle as a mixed-college doubles team. Koepler and Miller won 8-4 to advance to the semifinals, picking up an 8-6 win over Kevin Bayles and Grant Wick from Augustana. A bye in the final round gave Koelper and Miller the consolation bracket title.
Kubisz advanced to the consolation semifinals of the singles portion of the Kalamazoo tournament. He lost his first match to Westminster’s Alec Belden 7-6, 6-3. Kubisz followed with a three-set victory (2-6, 6-4, 10-6) over North Central’s Josh Clay. A 6-1, 6-2 win against Tommy Stein from Capital put Kubisz in the consolation quarterfinals, where he defeated Ryan Bourjaily from Albion 6-4, 6-0. North Central’s Naveed Heydari ended Kubisz’ run with a three-set win (6-3, 2-6, 10-6) over the Wabash freshman.
Peter Gunderman posted a 3-1 record in the Kalamazoo Collegiate Tournament in singles play. He won his first three opening matches before losing in the round of 16 to eventual runner-up Steven Pjevach from DePauw.
Daniel Delgado scored the only victory for the Little Giants in the ITA Open Championship Singles Tournament. He defeated Erik Hane from Knox College 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round of the tournament.
