Frederic Ford returns for Glee Club Reunion, 28-29 September 2007

Dr. Frederic H. Ford, Director of the Glee Club from 1972 to 1979, returned to Wabash to participate in the 2007 Reunion. Dr. Ford and Dr. Richard Bowen, the present Glee Club Director, shared rehearsal and conducting responsibilities for the weekend's program.

The Glee Club Reunion-Homecoming Concert was presented Saturday evening, September 29, at 8:00 PM in Salter Hall in the Fine Arts Center. The program included three choral ensembles, including the Alumni Glee Club, the current Glee Club, and a combined ensemble of current and alumni Glee Club singers. In addition, the 1956 Harmonaires performed during the concert.

Kathy and I are very eager to return to Wabash for this reunion. No where else in my career have I felt closer to my singers than I did at Wabash, I am honored to consider these "guys" my friends, because we explored and succeeded together, sometimes after strong differences of opinion, in those early days. We have many fond memories, of "flaming arrows" in Dinkelsbühl, of a concert for an audience of maybe six in Oxford, of tears in the eyes of our Scottish audience in Glenrothes, of galloping flu on the bus in 1975,

of many expert baby sitters (especially from Beta), of conquering our fears and pulling off a great Carmina Burana with the women of St. Mary of the Woods, and hosting a national IMC Seminar.
And lots of great music together. Wabash is a very special place. We hope to see many of our old friends, and make new ones.”

Prior to his arrival at Wabash College, Fred was Conductor of the Radcliffe Freshman Chorus and Assistant Conductor of the Harvard Glee Club and Radcliffe Choral Society and, after a stint in the U.S. Navy Reserves, taught and directed at the University of Virginia. His leadership of the Wabash College Glee Club included two European concert tours, in 1975 and 1979.

After leaving Wabash, Fred taught at Rutgers University until 1986, conducted the Rutgers University Choir, the Rutgers Glee Club, the Queens Chorale (women), and the early music Collegium Musicum. In 1990 he earned his Ph.D. at SUNY at Buffalo. At this time he began a new career, teaching music for over 16 years at Bridgewater-Raritan Regional High School in New Jersey, where he directed five choruses, earned a distinguished service award, a 2005 Somerset County Award for Arts in Education, and prior to retirement, was his school’s 2006 Governor’s Teacher of the Year.

Beyond the classroom, Fred has twice directed the NJ Central Region High School Honors Choir, and is currently Director of the 2007 NJ All-State HS Chorus. He has prepared choruses for the Buffalo Philharmonic and American Symphony Orchestras, and has been guest conductor of the New York Choral Society, the Society’s Chamber Singers, the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra, and the New Jersey Chamber Singers. In 1996 he directed two concerts of the Harvard Alumni Glee Club on a tour of Japan with Kyoto University Alumni, and two follow-up concerts in 1998 in New York and Cambridge. He and his wife Kathy reside in East Brunswick, NJ.

After a busy Spring '08 semester, including a succesful week-long concert tour in San Francisco, we "sang out" the Class of 2008 at Commence-ment on May 11. Although we're "off" for the summer, engaged in various activities, we look forward to the start of the 2008-09 year, beginning with Freshman Saturday on August 23.
