Fall 2003 – Professor Calisch
Tuesday-Thursday 8:00 – 11:00
Photography is at once a science and an art...inseparably linked throughout its astonishing rise from a substitute for skill of hand to an independent art form.
(Beaumont Newhall, Historian)
Photography can be an extra sense, or a reservoir for the senses...Photography can teach people to look, to feel, to remember in a way that they didn't know they could.
(Edward H. Land, Inventor)
Photography is a language with which a knowledgeable photographer can produce records, reports, essays, diary entries-even poetry.
(Ansel Adams, Photographer)
The mission of photography is to explain man to man and each man to himself.
(Edward Steichen, Photographer)

Captured Wilderness: The Landscape Photography of William Henry Jackson, David Underwood and David Taylor
A pioneer in landscape photography, W. H. Jackson set the standard by which western landscape photographers would be measured. These photographs, from the Wabash College Archives and made primarily on the Hayden Expeditions of the 1870’s, gave Americans a vision of the rugged power and beauty of the west. In addition two contemporary landscape photographers will be featured in this exhibition. David Taylor, an assistant professor at New Mexico State University, utilizes archival photographs in combination with his own aerial photos to create “photo constructions” that tell us about the physical and historical aspects of the landscape. David Underwood, Chair of the Art Department at Carson-Newman College, photographs traditional western landscapes in multiple sections. He then brings the components together in photo assemblages, which allows him to expand the boundaries of the single frame photograph.
