About the cover

“The Doctor” by Sir Luke Fildes, painted in 1887, is also the cover image on Dr. Alfred Tauber’s Confessions of a Medicine Man, one of several texts used last spring in Wabash College’s course in bio-ethics

The painting was inspired by actual events: the artist’s eldest son was stricken with a fatal illness in childhood, and his doctor’s unswerving dedication during the boy’s final days impressed the painter.
