| Description: | ART-201-01=BLS-270-04 African American Contemporary art synthesizes approaches from art history, Black Studies and visual culture studies to investigate race and representation in the United States since 1919. In this course we will discuss historical art movements such as the Red Summer, the Harlem Renaissance, Social Realism, Abstraction, Magical Realism, and Afrofuturism. We will utilize digital humanities investigation techniques such as mapping and network theory to explore how African American artists addressed ideas about race and belonging through works of art, and through the ties they forged within artist communities, collectives, and social movements. |
