Course Section Number: | PSC-330-01 |
Department: | Political Science |
Description: | GEN-209-01=PSC-330-01=PPE-338-02 Learn from a polymath, pioneering social reformer-a woman who was also an economist, sociologist, novelist, lecturer, and feminist. In this class, we will read Gilman (1860-1935) on eugenics, utopia, architecture, clothing, children, the family, and more. We will study her as a Machiavellian, a pragmatist, and a pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps American. Students will conduct original research into The Forerunner, a magazine Gilman wrote from front to back-even the advertisements. Students will read sections of The Forerunner and come together to discuss the political ideas they encounter there, before developing their own original analysis of those sections. |
