REL 290 Israel Immersion, 11/20/2016

Led by Professor Robert Royalty, his REL 290 class 'Contested Texts, Contested Sites' traveled to Israel for a nine-day immersion. Pictured here in a rooftop view in Tel Aviv is the St. Anthony's Catholic Church, located in the Old Jaffa neighborhood on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

The theater sits just a few meters from the Mediterranean Sea.

This Roman acqueduct carried water from it's source some eight miles from Caesarea Maritima.

Next, the class visited Meggido, which has ruins dating back to 15th Century BCE. Meggido was conquered and rebuilt 25 times. Evidence of its existence is literally stacked on top of itself. Pictrued above are the Solomonic Gates, whcih date abck to the 10th Century BCE.

The group stands above the community granary, which held 450 cubic meters of grain. Interestingly, the granary featured two sets of stairs: one to enter, the other to climb out.

The class makes the long descent into the aquifer, an underground water retrieval system that allowed the walled city to access its water supply even when it was under siege.

There was time for a quick stroll through campus.

While at the university, they saw a presentation by the University of Haifa and presentations by Tim Alexander, admissions director for the International School.

Glaze listens to Alexander, who emigrated to Israel in his mid-20’s and spoke openly about his decision and what he experienced in the transition.

Dr. Moshe Lavee led thought provoking discussions about the Israeli identity.

Dr. Lavee used the power of music to show the Jewish people’s gradual embrace of a sense of belonging without religious constraints.

Lavee also took questions from the Wabash contingent with a stunning view of Haifa in the distance.
