Taevian Satterfield ’20 carries a timber to add to the obstacle course he and his classmates were building at Achaius Ranch, south of Ladoga.

Freshmen from Professor Jeremy Hartnett's advising group moved poles and timbers to build an obstacle course for the horses in Achaius Ranch's equine therapy program. The ranch's mission is to provide refuge for neglected, abused, and unwanted horses and to encourage children and families to interact with the horses to nurture healing and growth.

'It's great to have these students here, and I think it's good for them, too,' said Achaius Ranch Director and Co-Founder Elisha McCulloh, holding her granddaughter, Annie. 'It's good for their critical thinking and problem solving skills to have to figure this out.'

Achaius is Celtic word meaning 'friend of horses,' and the ranch 'welcomes children and their families to the ranch to help care for and interact with horses in a Christ-centered, loving environment in order to nurture healing and growth for both horse and person.'

Achaius Ranch co-founder, trainer, and ranch manager Nicole Wilson supervised the students as they put the pieces of the obstacle course in place. 'We've been wanting to get this set up for years,' Wilson told the students. 'Finally, thanks to you, we were able to do it.'
