a group of people jumping in the air

Freshmen in Professor Crystal Benedicks’ advising group leap to avoid water balloon “cannonballs” during a battle on the high seas between the pirate ships ‘Eggplant’ and 'Dog.'

'Pirates' is the theme of Professor Benedicks’ freshman tutorial, and her whole family got into the action, including her daughter, Kat. The Jolly Roger hung from the flag pole in front of the house!

Professor Benedicks asks freshmen a question about 'Treasure Island', their summer reading, while George and Kat play pirates and Louie the dog borrows George’s boat. The freshman who correctly answered a question got to throw a water balloon at the other pirate boat.

The freshmen realized early on that the tubs holding their cannonballs could also be used to catch them!

Students earned a band-aid with the skull and crossbones for every question about Treasure Island they answered correctly. Ivan Martinez ’20 was the clear winner.

Some water balloon cannonballs proved tougher to burst than others. Here orientation leader Reno Jamison ’18 and Kory McLaughlin ’20 help George puncture a particularly stubborn cannonball.
