The Gentleman's Rule Discussions

Sunday night in nine sites across campus, freshmen met in small groups with alumni for what Dean of Students Mike Raters ’85 called 'a more relaxed but frank conversation of the Gentleman’s Rule.'' Alumni who are also Wabash professors, staff, deans, and directors led the sessions.

The gravity and challenge of living the Gentleman's Rule was the focus—from the classroom to fraternity house and living units, from academic settings to parties, on and off campus. But Dean Raters also warned freshman with true and painful stories about how quickly a seemingly fun moment can go wrong.

'We'll share some stories, our own experiences, and our own understanding of the Gentleman's Rule, and also learn from you how you’re regarding this rule.'

'There are times when being true to the Gentleman’s Rule is not going to be popular, is going to make your buddies mad at you,' says Andrew Dettmer ’15. 'It can be very difficult, and you need to be ready for that.'

'You've been talking about applying the Gentleman’s Rule to others' behavior,' said Will Arvin. 'Let’s talk about applying it to your own.'
